The Sunday Journal

The art of doing nothing well

A short case for the unplanned hour.

Most weekends fail quietly. Not because nothing happened, but because everything did. A brunch booking, a gym class, an errand that could have waited, a message that couldn't. By Sunday evening the rest never arrives, it just gets postponed again.

Doing nothing well is not the same as having nothing planned. It's an hour left open on purpose, with somewhere good to spend it and nowhere else you're expected to be. A porch. A book you've been meaning to finish. A second cup of coffee that goes cold because the conversation was better than the coffee.

We build this into every itinerary deliberately, not as a gap between the good parts, but as one of them. Guests are often surprised when the unplanned hour turns out to be the one they mention first, afterward.

It's easy to underestimate what an empty afternoon is worth, until you've had one that was actually protected.
